Silent hill 2 is one of the scariest games I have ever played. Even though it doesn’t have any jump scares and came out in 2001 on the PlayStation 2, it manages to hold up by its unrelenting atmosphere and the constant scare of the unknown. The story of Silent hill 2 is that you are James Sunderland who just received a letter from your wife who died three years ago, saying that she is in the town Silent hill waiting for you. Silent hill 2 is the perfect sequel by taking what worked from the first and by putting it in its own self-contained story, with the only connection between the two games being the town. The game also has a great narrative with all the enemies having deeps amounts of symbolism. For example the main enemy who keeps reappearing is a reflection of the main character, James Sunderland.

Wolfpack is a documentary directed by Crystal Moselle and tells the story of six brothers and one sister locked away from the outside world in a Manhattan apartment by their parents, never going outside and being home schooled by their mother, so they keep themselves entertained by re-enacting their favourite movies.
Wolfpack shares the story of six brothers and one sister being trapped in their own apartment not being to go out. The documentary does showing how they coped not being let out of their apartment, it also tells you why the partners did it. Throughout the film it shows home videos of when the children were young, showing clips of them re-enacting their favourite films. Unfortunately I felt that the film could have been longer, for it only being 1hr 20mintues, and shown more of them making re-enacting and making more scenes of different movies. But that is the only real complaint of the film. The film does a great of the children went through and also the parents.
Overall I think the film is a really good documentary and does a great job of telling a horrible story but also emotional highs as well but was a bit too short so therefore I will be giving it an 7/10.
The Wolfpack is in cinemas now, certificated 15

Interstellar review

The film Interstellar is directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Sir Michael Caine It is also written by Christopher Nolan and his brother Jonathan Nolan, who works with NASA. All of these performances are astonishing and great to watch. There is also clear directing from Christopher Nolan.
The synopsis of the film is that it is set in the future but we are not told how far in the future. It is when the world is almost becoming uninhabitable because of dust storms and crops struggling to grow. So they have to find a habitable planet to live on.
Apart from that, I can’t tell you much more because I feel this will give away the story and it won’t be any fun to watch. I feel that this was great and contained excitement throughout the movie. The special effects were also very good- it felt like you were in space as the film’s story twisted and turned, so good in fact that it won an Oscar for the effects. It also won awards for sound mixing, editing and the best soundtrack as well; I thought it was unfortunate that it did not receive any nominations or awards for its actin or directing. All performances were very good.
I would recommend that everyone to see this film but especially those interested in space because all the problems they encounter are in space. Also this is a very good film for anyone who likes Sci-fi and particularly 2001: A Space Odyssey due to the fact that these two films are very similar. This film can also be enjoyed if you like any of Christopher Nolan’s other films such as: The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and Memento. I wouldn’t say that Matthew McConaughey’s performance is better than his one in Dallas Buyer’s Club but it is still a performance worth watching nonetheless. Overall I would fully recommend this film and it is one of the best I have seen all year. This is why I am giving it 8/10.
Interstellar is on DVD and Blu-ray now, certificated 12.

Godzilla (2014) review

Godzilla is directed by Gareth Edwards, who is famous for a film called monsters, and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen and Bryan Cranston. The performances are not bad and are made up for with good directing.
The plot is that Ford Brody (Aaron Taylor-Johnson who is known for kick-ass), a Navy bomb expert, has just reunited with his family in San Francisco when he is forced to go to Japan to help his estranged father, Joe (Bryan Cranston who is most famous for breaking bad). Soon, both men have to deal with escalating crisis when Godzilla, King of the Monsters, arises from the sea to threaten the survival of humanity.
If you are expecting this film to have a lot Godzilla featured in it be mistaken, this film focuses on the people trying to survive what Godzilla and the other monsters have caused, This is ultimately the film’s downfall, if you are also watching it for Bryan Cranston he is not in it a lot either, I feel like the only reason he is in the film is that they could put him in the trailer and get all the breaking bad fans come to watch it. The film focusing on Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen, this means that there is only really 10 minutes of screen time for Godzilla! This is the really bad thing for the film that it centres on characters you don’t really care about, leaving less time for the monsters. But when Godzilla and the other two monsters are on screen it is truly the best part of the film. Due to its cinematography, this is only really mainly of the monsters, and its SGI of the monsters. The last act is by far the best act because contains the most screen time of the monsters and is the most exciting part of the film. But it doesn’t pay off for the 1 hr 40 minutes of build-up we had before.
I would still recommend this film to Godzilla fans and to people who like Pacific Rim. This is a far better improvement of the 1998 film, and I am looking forward to the sequel. Overall this film is good but suffers from having the plot more focused on the humans and leaving Godzilla with hardly any screen time, but the film made up for it for when the monsters do have screen time it was thoroughly entertaining. Hopefully in the sequel they can have more time focused on the monsters but still have a human lead story like this one did. The performances are decent but nothing special. Therefore I will give this film 6/10.
Godzilla is in on sale now on DVD and Blu-ray, certificated 12.

Tsotsi review

Tsotsi is a film about redemption and the struggles of people living in poverty in South Africa. The film follows a thug and his gang as they live a life of crime in the township of Johannesburg, South Africa. Until “Tsotsi”, the protagonist, mistakenly kidnaps a baby leading him on the path to redemption.
The film is directed by Gavin Hood, who is most famous for work recently on Eye in the sky and Wolverine origins. However this by far his best film, and some great directing due to his colours to reflect the themes and what is happening in the story, also the use of symbolism with some of the shots and costume design helps with this as well. This film was only going to be shown in South Africa but however was later shown couple years in wide release at the film festivals. It also picked up an academy award for best foreign film. The film is also well acted even though most of the cast are virtually unknown to western audiences.
Even though Tsotsi if a good, the film does suffer from a few flaws. One of things that the film suffers from is the fact that is the film is very predictable, for this I mean that from the beginning we can tell that the main character is becoming to become a better person. This makes it almost feel like the film is dragging on towards the end, even though with a time of 1hr 40mins, because we know what is going to happen. Another part of the film which I don’t like is the fact that most of the characters are mainly just clichés, who have the “thick one” which is Aup, Butcher who is the violent one and reckless, Boston who is the intelligent one and Tsotsi as the one who is distance but is the most sensitive.
However one of the things I do like about the film is of the issues it displays, of poverty in South Africa and how people have to turn to crime to survive. I feel that the film does a good job of displaying this by setting the film from the point of view of someone living in poverty and has already turned to crime but is trying to do what’s right and turning back. I also feel that the use of colours and lighting is also great as it reflects what is happening to the character and what is happening in the story. For example using the light and dark to represent Tsotsi change from good to bad. I also feel that Gavin Hood does a great job as using shots for a great way of visual storytelling, displaying more of themes of the film and the issues.
Overall I feel that Tsotsi is a film well worth your time even though it does suffer from some character clichés and the predictability. However I still feel that the messages and themes are very important and are told very stylistically through the camera angles and the use of mise-en-scene. I would give this film a 7/10.
